Story 1

It was a rainy evening. The street lights were dimly visible. The roads and allies were all empty. One street dog was lying in the shade of a small roadside shop, but still it was not able to save itself from the heavy downpour. Far from the shop there was an unfinished construction of a big building. Some daily wagers had taken refuge there. All the drains are overflowing and the water is flowing over the road. Two ladies who took shelter in that half constructed building were looking at each other for sometime. After some 30-45 minutes one lady could not keep quiet. She was the younger of the two. She started asking the other – ‘where do you work?’ The older lady seemed to be more reluctant to answer. She was between 55-60 years of age. Then the younger one again asked ‘Ma ji !’, considering her age, ‘where do you work?’. The old lady slowly opened her mouth and uttered incoherently -‘ I work here in this building.’ She looked away towards the road where the never ending rain was creating its own music. Suddenly few dogs started barking softly and stopped after few minutes. A dog started crying with a long continuous sound. The young lady with a smile in the face told –‘isn’t this a perfect time for a ghost story Ma ji? Do you have any stock of such stories or have you experienced anything?’ Now the old lady gave short smile as if she was silently telling that – ‘what do you know of ghosts? You know nothing’ The younger one waited for a response and then again asked – ‘this is a right time for a ghost story. Rain will not stop this night and I cannot go home. It will be good if we can tell a story each. Maa ji what do you say?’ The old lady again gave a short smile and told -‘do you know this building is like this for how many years?’ The other lady replied -‘ No’. The old lady seemed to start her story-‘this building is in this unfinished state for more than 10 years.10 years before from now there were many workers working here. Then one day it happened.’ After telling this much she stopped. There was a pin drop silence except the sound of the rains. Suddenly a owl’s cry was heard. The young lady asked -‘ what happened?’ The old lady started again after few minutes. ‘That day was also a rainy day like this one.10 workers were taking rest in different parts of this building. Around midnight everyone heard the cry of a lady shouting for help. ‘Help me!’ The voice said. It repeated and repeated and was not stopping but sometime growing weaker and sometimes very shrill . One by one the workers got up and gathered near the centre of the building. One worker said-‘who is shouting for help? Are all here or are we missing someone?’ One fellow replied – ‘all of us are here and the voice is not known to us also. Let us spread out and check who is it’. They walked away in different directions to check who is so eagerly looking for help. After moving around for about 30 minutes they came back to the same place and each one mentioned they have not seen anyone. The voice seemed to have stopped. They just sat there and kept an ear to all the sounds waiting for another cry from that unknown lady. They were feeling sleepy and after few minutes some were already in deep sleep. Suddenly the sound came. The sound of a heavy item dropped on the road. All woke up immediately on this big sound and ran outside from where the sound came. They saw some big thing has fallen on the road. They rushed to the spot and was very surprised and also became very afraid. Everyone’s face became pale with fear. It was an woman who had probably jumped off the roof of the building and was covered in blood.’ After telling this much the lady stopped. The owl cried again. The younger lady felt that something rapidly moved from one side to the other on the road. She felt a shiver running down her backbone. Then she asked – ‘ what happened then?’ The old lady started again. ‘The workers then called up their supervisor through a phone which one of them had. The supervisor came on hearing the incident but after seeing the body of the woman she also could not recognize. He told ‘we cannot do anything now in this rainy night time. We have to wait till the morning. You all go and take rest and one of you can guard this body. ‘ The workers went inside the building and one of them guarded the woman’s body’. The lady continued -‘ Around 4am in the morning the worker who was guarding the body woke up suddenly and screamed. The other workers whoever woke up came running and saw that the woman’s body has vanished. They were surprised greatly.’ After telling this she stopped and closed her eyes as if got tired telling the story. The young lady was also silent.
